DReAM is international student summer program initiated by UGM students first in 2009 to embrace all differences of background, nationality, idealism, religions, and to conduct a research based activities in three realms of interests: small medium enterprises, post-disaster management, and community empowerment. The theme for this year DReAM is ‘Preparing Global Future Leaders for Better Awareness and Mutual Understanding among Nations’ by adopting the interfaith cooperation approach in creating a better tomorrow.

The objectives of this program are:

  • Building the spirit of multiculturalism and interfaith collaboration for the next global leaders.
  • Enhancing the responsibility of the youth to the society and environment
  • Introducing cultural and traditional values for the development to the youth

Why Interfaith?

Interfaith cooperation approach is important issue because recently conflict has its root based on faith. From Catholic – Protestant conflict in Ireland to Pattani conflict in Thailand. This approach is expected to emerge mutual understanding among youth from different backgrounds.

 

The Event

The event will take place in The Special Region of Yogyakarta from July12 – 25, 2010. The activities of the program consist of lectures, excursions, community service, youth assembly, and field trip.

Lectures will be divided into three topics: Small Medium Enterprises, Post-Disaster Management, and Community Empowerment. The participants also will have excursions to the center for religious and cultural studies and center for disaster study.

DREaM provides layers of activities during the program to equip and enhance student skills and capacity to respond to the needs of the future world. DREaM 2010 adopts and introduces the interfaith concept of cooperation in the spirit of the program; in continuing the spirit of Indonesia-US Interfaith Dialogue January 2010. In the future, DREaM believes that interfaith cooperation will blossoms in the international locus and shape a more peaceful world. In the light of the previous DREaM, the program of DREaM 2010 generally design in three cores: disaster management, community empowerment, and small and medium enterprises understandings wherein each participants will be assigned based on his or her interest into one of the core for further research and capacity building in one particular core.

In order to assist DREaM-ers to achieve the goals, DREaM provides series of lectures from academicians, expert, and practitioners in the particular field subsequent to each one of the core of DREaM. Excursions are also advantage in DREaM for its participants to further comprehend their interest in related fields.

To get closer to the environment, the participants will be taken to experience community service conducted by UGM students. They will have 3 days experience living with the local community and learning about the program. For the peak of academic activities, there will be world youth assembly integrating with interfaith approach.

The last but not least, the participants will get unforgettable experience in a field trip visiting interesting and cultural places in The Special Region of Yogyakarta.

Activities

There are two main activities for the participants : Academic Programs and Non-Academic Programs. Academic Programs consist of several program which will provide insight and knowledge such as Lectures, Excursions, Community Service, and World Youth Leader Assembly (WYLA). In academic program, the participants will be divided into 3 main focus groups. Each group will have its own focus in one of these cores : post-disaster management, community empowerment, and small and medium enterprises. Every groups will be supervised by one project supervisor. It is expected after given series of lectures from academicians, experts, and practicioners, every group is able to formulate small research based on their particular focus. The lectures will be held for three days.

Excursions are the next activity for the participants to further comprehend their interest in related fields. Based on interfaith approach, It is recommended that the participants will have visit in Center for Religious and Cultural Studies and Center for Disaster Study. The participants also have advantage in visiting some religious tourims objects to give them some pictures in how interfaith going in Indonesia.

In order to formulate the small research project every group will have free time session with their project supervisor. The research will be conducted during community service. This one-day free time session is provided to the participants to set preparation for the research and community service.

Every year, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) sends their students to do two-months community service. This program has been conducted for more than 50 years for empowering community. This year, participants will experience the community service program along with UGM students. The participants will stay in rural areas during this activity for three days. This activity will give the students once in a lifetime experience in interacting with the local people of Yogyakarta and living in rural areas. This is the most challenging activity on DREaM which you can’t have in other summer program.

All participants will be gathered in World Youth Leader Assembly event in the end of academic program. In this event the participants are gathering, discussing, and drafting some kind declaration based on their lecturing, excursion, community service, and research. This declaration will be declare in the closing ceremony of DREaM.

After having serious series of lectures, excursions, and tiring community service, It’s time for the participants to have fun in Non-Academic Program. They will have three days field trip before the closing ceremony. On this section the participants will be able to enjoy the tourism and cultural objects in Yogyakarta.
