7.1 PhD: NTNU

The Department of Engineering Cybernetics has a vacancy for a 4-year PhD research fellowship within the automatic control program.
We are seeking candidates with a strong background in systems and control or applied mathematics for research on control and estimation for distributed-parameter systems. While the research topic is initially broad, a specific objective of the project is to develop state- and parameter estimation schemes for application within medical imaging based on ultrasound. Experience with medical imaging is therefore an advantage, but not required. The applicant should possess strong computing capabilities and communication skills in English.
The applicants are encouraged to contact Professor Ole Morten Aamo, email:  aamo[AT]ntnu.no
Applications are to be submitted electronically through http://www.jobbnorge.no/job.aspx?jobid=70895
Preferably, we want the attachments in one file. Applications should be marked: IME 044-2010.
Application deadline: January 23rd, 2011.

7.2 PhD: K.U. Leuven
Contriubted by: Wim Michiels,  Wim.Michiels[AT]cs.kuleuven.be
2 PhD Positions: Numerical methods, computational tools and software for the analysis and control of LPV systems.

The aim of the project is to develop (numerical) methods, computational tools and software for the analysis and control of linear infinite-dimensional systems with time-varying parameters. These methods should cope with uncertainty on the system model and must be capable of designing optimal controllers with a prescribed order or structure, where optimality refers to robust stability and performance measures. The project also includes the experimental validation of the obtained control design methodologies on a mechatronic test setup.

Send your electronic application to Professor Wim Michiels: Wim.Michiels[AT]cs.kuleuven.be
Subject of your email should be: “PhD Position LPV”.

7.3 PhD: NTNU
Contributed by: Lars Imsland,  lars.imsland[AT]itk.ntnu.no
PhD: SmartGrid control and Optimization at NTNU

As part of a larger SmartGrid research initiative at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, there are three available PhD positions at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics. The SmartGrid is envisioned as the future intelligent electricity delivery, production and consumption management system. It shall enable a more efficient house-holding with energy, reduce the consumption and allow a large variety of new and greener means of production.
The themes of the three control and optimization positions are:
– Secure control of multi-terminal HVDC
– MPC for balancing control
– Control system design for unreliable communication networks

Consult http://ime.ntnu.edu/research/smartgrid for further information about the project.
For information about requirements and how to apply (note deadline January 15th), consult http://www.jobbnorge.no/job.aspx?jobid=70934 .
